Intersections | Cross-sections, a two-day interdisciplinary conference organized by the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture at York University and Ryerson University, invites academic and artistic submissions for the Intersections | Cross-sections 2018 Graduate Conference & Art Exhibition, to be held on March 9 and 10, 2018.
The conference theme, (Re)claiming Space, encourages submissions exploring the “space(s)” within, around, and about us or others. We are particularly interested in proposals for works that engage with conceptions of ‘space’ and its (re)clamations in academic and artistic practice, however you define it, in the study, production, and/or critique of communication and/or culture.
Potential topics for submission include, but are not limited to:
● Imagined spaces
● Convergent spaces
● Spaces of resistance
● Internal/external/liminal spaces
● Self-constructed spaces
● Autobiology as inner space
● Contested space
● Pedagogy & the neocapitalist village
● Understanding queer space
● Urban and digital space
● Space for _______
● Positive and negative space
SUBMISSIONS FOR INTERSECTIONS PAPERS & PANELS
Please submit 250-word abstracts for 15-minute paper presentations, along with a 50-100 word biography and contact information. Alternatively, please submit a single, 500-word proposal for 50-minute panels/roundtables, along with a 50-100 word biography and contact information for each panelist. We are especially interested in submissions that fall into the categories of: Media and Culture, Technology and Practice, and Politics and Policy, however, all submissions that align with the theme will be considered. SUBMISSIONS FOR CROSS-SECTIONS ARTWORK & PERFORMANCES
Submissions are encouraged from a wide range of disciplines, inclusive of but not limited to: paintings, drawings, photography, collage, sculpture, interactive works, performances, film/video projections, new media, and other marginal or inter-media forms. Exhibit spaces will be announced via the conference website and social media. Please submit a 250–300 word summary of the work along with a 50-100 word biography and contact information. Please include still images or video, and be sure to specify the medium, size, year, duration (if applicable), and technical or spatial requirements for presentation. SUBMISSIONS FOR STUDENT KEYNOTE
The Intersections | Cross-sections 2018 conference is inviting proposals from PhD candidates to deliver a 45-minute keynote on the opening day of the conference. Submissions must include a 300-400 word abstract, your academic CV, and 4-6 keywords that represent the major foci of your proposed keynote. Upon being shortlisted, we will require a Word document or PDF of your full paper, due February 10th, 2018 by email to iscs.conference@gmail.com. The student keynote may be an excerpt from a dissertation in progress or recently completed that aligns with the theme and topics of the conference. Submit at www.iscs-conference.com.
